Mark Spiteri Lucas

Mark Spiteri Lucas is without any doubt a familiar name in the local entertainment scene. He comes from a family that over the years has produced a number of talented musicians and singers who form part of Malta’s  post-war musical heritage namely the late Oscar and his brother John Charles Lucas (Mark’s grandfather), Godwin and the late David Lucas (my uncles) and also well-known singer and cabaret artist Joe Cutajar. 

Mark started piano and music theory lessons at the age of 7 until he achieved the A.L.C.M diploma.  At the age of 13, Mark joined his brother’s band and together they played in some of the leading night spots and hotels on the island. In the meantime, he was approached by renowned musician Mro. Joe Brown to join his show band. With this band he played in quite a good number of concerts and festivals such as:


• Living Legends (original musical) 1994
• The Music of Andrew Lloyd Weber I, II u III.
• A Tribute to Hollywood Musicals 1996.
• The Malta Song for Europe Festival 1997.
• Festival of the Maltese Song 1995 u 1996.
• Fl-Ghaqda l-Melodija Song Festival 1997-2000.
• Freddie Portelli Live in Concert 1996.

Mark has also played in “Night of the Stars” 1993, together with the David Lucas Memorial Band, and in the concert Just Hits in September 1996 where he accompanied well-known Welsh singer and musician, Linda Myers. This concert was organized as part of the festivities being held every year in Floriana to mark Independence Day. 
 
A few years ago, Mark set up his own concert band. With his band, apart from playing the piano and keyboards, Mark is also responsible for its musical direction and all music arrangements performed during various events. The Mark Spiteri Lucas Band has performed successfully in:

Mark is also the composer of a large number of songs and has participated both as a singer and song-writer in various festivals, both locally and abroad. In fact, he has written songs for renowned singers such as Ira Losco, Nadine Axisa, Roger Tirazona, Mark Tonna, Leontine and Julie Zahra, just to mention a few. Mark’s songs have also competed in various international festivals such as in Bulgaria and Italy. He is also the composer of the musical “Robin Hood – Il-leggenda ta’ Nottingam” He has also written signature tunes for important TV programmes, namely “Ilwien Sajfin”, “Net Stars”, “KolloxSibt” and “Kollox ma’ Kollox”.

Mark Spiteri Lucas has also played important parts in some theatrical works including the musical “Il-Hotbi ta’ Notre Dame” (2000), “Barabbas” (2001), “Toni Bajada l–Eroj fl-Assedju l-Kbir” (2001), “Nisa ta’ Trojja” (2001), “Ben Hur” (2002), “Scrooge” (2003), “www.GueppiMattewCallus.com”, (2003), “Il-Holma ta’ bil-Lejl f’Nofs is-Sajf” (A Midsummer’s Night Dream) (2003), “Idejn il-Vjolinista” (2003), “Bla Kommixin” (2003), “Musicall” (2003), “Cabaretic” (2004), “Tigi Saltnatek” (2004), “Waslet is-Siegha” (2005). Mark has attended drama lessons at the Bronk Productions School of Drama for four years. There, he trained regularly under the tutorship of Mr. John Suda. He also took up Performing Arts under the direction of Mr. Patrick Vella were he obtained Grade 7 from the Trinity College, London.

Mark Spiteri Lucas also took part in various TV drama productions such as in popular sitcom, “Simpatici”, “Angli”, “Is-Salib tal-Fidda”, and “Qeghdin Sew” with his most important roles being interpreted in the hit teleserials “Il-Madonna ta`-Coqqa” and “Delitti f’Malta” as well as in “Idejn il-Vjolinista”. At present, he also forms part of the cast of popular Maltese teleserial “Becky”, which is being aired on TVM every Sunday evening. Mark was also resident musician in the popular T.V. quiz show “Hi” and also on Monday’s early evening programme “Niltaqghu it-Tnejn”.
 
In 2003, after establishing himself as one of Malta’s top entertainers, Mark together with his brothers Ivan and Kurt formed “Spiteri Lucas Entertainment” with the aim of producing quality live music and theatre productions for locals and visiting tourists alike. During the past three years, Spiteri Lucas Entertainment has managed to successfully produce “Live from the Screen” (2003), “That’s Amore” (2004) “Dipinto di Blu” (2004), ”A Tribute to the Oldies” (2005), “Sleigh Bells in the City – the live family Christmas Show” (2005), “Romanza” (2006) and “Golden Oldies” (2006).

Currently Mark Spiteri Lucas is the musical director and band leader of popular Saturday afternoon programme “KolloxSibt” where he is responsible for all music arrangements performed during the five and a half hours long programme. This is the second year Mark is occupying this post.

Mark is fully qualified teacher with a degree from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Malta, BA (hons) and with a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). Mark’s dissertation analyses a number of local theatrical works of a political nature, staged in Malta way back in the eighties.


Ivan Spiteri Lucas

Ivan Spiteri Lucas is also a well-known musician and singer in the local entertainment scene.  He started his first music lessons at a very young age under the guidance of his grandfather, the late Mro. John Charles Lucas, a renowned violinist. He pursued his studies in clarinet under the supervision of Mro. H. Cachia, where he spent seven years playing classical music with one of the most successful philharmonic societies in Malta, the “Societa Filarmonica Nazionale La Valette”.

At the age of fifteen he switched to pop music and started playing together with his band in private functions and some of Malta’s established hotels. It was during this time that Ivan showed ample interest in singing. Soon, he started to build his repertoire of songs that vary from evergreen classical standards to present day pop songs and romantic ballads.  Ivan became the leading singer of his band. Later on, his brother Mark joined in as pianist.

Ivan played in “Night of the Stars” 1993, together with the David Lucas Memorial Band, and in the concert Just Hits in September 1996 where he accompanied well-known Welsh singer and musician, Linda Myers. He also performed in several concerts and gigs namely during the Independence Day Activities, “The Farsons Great Beer Festival”, “The Delicata Classic Wine Festival”, “The Bugibba Arts Festival 2005”, “UHM FEST 2005 & 2006”, “The Malta Historical Cities Festival 2004 & 2005” organized by MTA and during the last FECC Carnival Convention Ball which was held in June 2005. Ivan also took part in the JA-PO-RO-SE concert during the first Notte Bianca activities which was held last October.   

Ivan Spiteri Lucas also took part in various local song festivals, including the Malta Song for Europe (1998), Festival l-G]anja tal-Poplu (1997, 1998, 2001, 2005) and the Independence Song Festival (1997-1999). One of his greatest achievements so far was the winning of the European Region of Commonwealth Song Competition 1993 with the song “An Echo to the Future”. Ivan Spiteri Lucas also played the role of Antonio in the musical Rita ta’ Cascia (2000) and the part of Friar Tuck in the musical “Robin Hood – Il-Leggenda ta’ Nottingam” (2003). Last August, Ivan was also one of the main protagonists in Spiteri Lucas Entertainment’s “Golden Oldies”, the live spectacular show featuring songs from the 50s and 60s which was staged successfully at the Old Opera House in Valletta as part of the Malta Arts Festival – Summer 2006, organized by the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts.

Throughout his career, Ivan has worked as a session musician with several local singers such as Renato, Debbie Scerri, Moira Stafrace, popular local band X-Tend, Julie & Ludwig and Fabrizio Faniello together with foreign artists such as Linda Myers and John Martell.

Nowadays, Ivan together with his brothers Mark and Kurt forms part of “Spiteri Lucas Entertainment”, an entertainment agency providing consultancy services for all kinds of special events. SLE also produces live music and theatre productions of the highest standard for the local public as well as for visiting tourists. Ivan is also the resident saxophone player and a resident singer in one of Malta’s most popular Saturday afternoon television shows, “KolloxSibt”.
